The government is to make a decision within the next few days to build a new Central Polish Airport as more passengers choose air travel, the Puls Biznesu daily has reported.

According to the paper, the airport will probably be located between the capital, Warsaw, and Łódź, the third largest city in Poland.

Puls Biznesu added that the new airport will be able to serve 50 million passengers a year, twice as many as Warsaw’s Chopin airport, currently the biggest in the country.

The project will probably take up to 17 years to be finished and it is estimated to cost PLN 25 billion (EUR 5.76 billion), excluding roads and rail lines leading to it, the paper reported.

According to the daily, Poland cannot count on European Union subsidies for the project, as Brussels is not interested in supporting the construction of new airports.

Warsaw’s Chopin airport was used by 12.8 million passengers in 2016, but projections suggest that it will run out of spare capacity in 2020 while not being able to expand any further due to its location in the capital.
