Forecasts by the European Commission that Polish GDP will grow by 3.5 percent in 2017 are underestimated, Poland’s Finance Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said.

Morawiecki, who is also Poland’s deputy prime minister, said that it is possible that the Polish economy could grow more than forecast.

In mid-May, the European Commission increased its economic growth forecast for Poland in 2017 from 3.2 percent to 3.5 percent

“In February, the European Commission lowered GDP growth forecast from 3.4 percent to 3.2 percent, but after two months [the Commission] concluded that GDP growth forecast has to be increased, and raised it to 3.5 percent. There are chances of even higher growth than the Commission predicts,” Morawiecki told a press conference in Brussels.

The Polish economy grew 4.0 percent in real terms year on year in the first quarter, the Central Statistical Office said in a recent flash estimate, giving seasonally unadjusted figures.
