With 4.0 percent GDP growth and unemployment at a record low, Poland should be an economic model for Western Europe, Polish government spokesman Rafał Bochenek has said.

"Poland should be a model for many countries, especially in Western Europe, in terms of how to develop a stable economy," Bochenek told public broadcaster TVP Info.

He pointed out that Poland has one of the highest growth rates in Europe.

"All the indicators are going up all the time. These indicators are very satisfactory. I think other countries, especially in Western Europe, can envy us. [Indicators] are all growing, except one, because unemployment is falling," Bochenek added.

Joblessness in Poland dropped to 7.7 percent in April, the lowest level in 26 years, the country’s Central Statistical Office said on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Polish economy grew 4.0 percent in real terms year on year in the first quarter, the country’s Central Statistical Office announced earlier this month.

Bochenek said the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) government’s flagship “500+” child benefits programme “has contributed not only to the elimination of poverty in Polish families, but also to increasing demand and consumption, which in turn has translated into economic growth."

With its 500+ programme, the PiS government aims to ease the burdens of child-rearing by giving families with two or more children a handout of PLN 500 (USD 134, EUR 120) a month per child.

Poorer families receive the allowance even if they have just one child.
