Nord Stream 2, which will connect Russia and Germany while circumventing Poland and other countries in the region, has been a controversial project from the outset.

The Polish Biznes Alert website reported on Monday that Clean Energy Wire – which describes itself as an independent non-profit, non-partisan service for journalists – recently organised a press event devoted to the German gas sector and its importance for energy transformation.

During the event, a journalist asked Jochen Flasbarth, a senior official from the German environment ministry, whether the country would be moving away from fossil fuels once the Nord Stream 2 pipeline – with a capacity of 55 billion cubic metres – is officially opened.

“Germany is not the only country interested in Nord Stream 2. Other states may need this gas. I do not know the economic assumptions of this project,” Flasbarth was quoted as saying.

“We are conducting very close consultations with Russia. Energy policy is one of the areas in which we … maintain cooperation despite sanctions,” Biznes Alert quoted the German official as saying. (rg/pk)
