Among the aims of the R&D projects will be protecting rail infrastructure against ice in the winter and against theft, reducing the impact of rail transport on the environment, and making travel easier for people with disabilities.

The Dziennik Gazeta Prawna newspaper reported last month that the Polish government plans to spend more than PLN 66 billion (EUR 15 billion) on railway infrastructure overall by 2023.

PKP carried over 153 million passengers in the first six months of this year, setting a record.
