Officers detained 14 people aged 26 to 63, including 10 foreigners in a raid on the site in the Otwock region, southwest of Warsaw.

Some of those in the factory tried to hide in the production hall but were found by police.

The IAR news agency reported that the authorities were deprived of an estimated PLN 22 million (EUR 5.2m, USD 6.1m) in unpaid tax.

A police spokeswoman said officers seized 21 tonnes of coarse-cut tobacco and machines worth about PLN 2.5 million.

Those detained have been charged with being part of an organized crime gang, illegal manufacture of tobacco products and tax offences. They face up to 10 years in prison. (pk)
