Poles’ total debt exceeds country’s budget gap: report

Over 2.5 mln citizens are behind on credit and bill payments, the study found. The total sum of liabilities equals PLN 62.3 billion, twice the amount of Poland’s budget gap forecast for 2017.

In the third quarter of this year, the Polish Overdue Payment Index rose from 76.8 to 79.4 points.

“This means that for every 1,000 adult Poles, 79 are falling behind in credit installments and bills [such as alimonies, utility bills and court payments],” the report said.

In the same period the number of debtors rose by 93,244 to reach 2 million, the Economic Data Bureau (BIG) reported.

The ten biggest debtors in Poland owe their creditors PLN 420 million in total.

The data, compiled by BIG InfoMonitor and the Credit Information Bureau, include outstanding payments of over PLN 200 that are at least 60 days late. (aba/gs)
