As of 2018, Polish shops will charge PLN 0.20 (EUR 0.05) per disposable shopping bag.

Initially, the new recycling fee was meant to go towards the state’s environmental protection efforts such as fighting air pollution, but it transpires that the additional money will also help shore up public finances, according to the Dziennik online newspaper.

Retailers will have to pay a VAT tax on each shopping bag, which means that shoppers will spend PLN 0.25 in total per bag, Dziennik said.

The VAT tax from each bag is expected to generate around PLN 250 million for the state budget in 2018 alone, according to Dziennik.
