Regional hubs accounted for 61 percent of all air traffic in the country, which totalled 40.09 million last year. The remaining 39 percent of travellers flew via Warsaw’s Chopin Airport, totalling 15.75 million people.

The top three regional airports in 2017 were Kraków (5.83 million passengers), Gdańsk (4.6 million) and Katowice (3.89 million).

The Olsztyn-Mazury airport in Szymany recorded the highest growth in air traffic, having serviced 122 percent more people than in 2016.

Last year was the best year for Poland’s regional airports in history, Artur Tomasik, head of the Polish Regional Airports Association, said. “The substantial upswing in air traffic recorded by virtually all hubs shows that they are a vital component of the country’s transport system,” he added.

Tomasik also said that there was room for optimism in the sector in the years to come. “The Civil Aviation Authority forecasts that nearly 65 million passengers will pass through Polish airports in 2025,” he said. “Assuming that more than half of them will be serviced by regional hubs, 14 airports will divide among themselves 35 million travellers,” he added.

The organisation estimates that some 26.5 million travellers will pass through Poland’s regional airports throughout 2018. (aba/gs)
