Poland’s jobless rate at 6.9% in January: labour minister

Unemployment in Poland inched up to 6.9 percent in January from 6.6 percent in December, the country’s labour minister said on Wednesday.

There were around 1,134,000 people registered as jobless in employment offices nationwide in January, 52,900 more than in December, Family, Labour and Social Policy Minister Elżbieta Rafalska said.

At the same time, the number of job openings increased by around 47,000 from the previous month, Rafalska added.

The number of unemployed in January was 18.8 percent lower than in the same month last year, the ministry reported.

Joblessness in Poland fell to 6.5 percent in November, the lowest in the last 25 years, while October’s reading was 6.6 percent, according to the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS).
