Wholesale giant to phase out battery eggs in Poland

Eurocash Group, a major wholesale distributor of food products in Poland, has said it will phase out the sale of battery eggs by 2025.

“With the interest of [hens] in mind, the Eurocash Group… declares it wants to withdraw battery eggs from its array of products by 2025,” the company said in a statement.

The company is following in the footsteps of grocery chains Biedronka and Żabka, and supermarkets such as Tesco and Carrefour, alongside many other companies opting for cage-free eggs.

According to the Open Cages animal rights organisation, no more than 12 percent of hens in Poland are kept in cage-free conditions. (aba/pk)
