Six people have been killed and three injured in an explosion on Thursday at a chemical plant in the Czech Republic owned by Unipetrol, part of Polish refiner PKN Orlen.

The foreign ministry in Warsaw said it did not yet know whether any Poles were among the victims of the blast, the IAR news agency reported.

The explosion took place at a Unipetrol chemical plant in Kralupy nad Vltavou, north of Prague.

Unipetrol is owned by Poland's biggest oil refiner, PKN Orlen.

Unipetrol spokesman Pavel Kaidl said that it was not yet known what caused the blast.
