The new programme is expected to help boost the thermal efficiency of some 4 million households, Radio Zet said.

Some PLN 130 billion (EUR 30 bn, USD 35 bn) has been earmarked to reach that goal over a period of 11 years, the broadcaster added.

The programme is aimed at co-funding expenses such as connecting houses to an electric heating grid, replacing coal-fired stoves with more eco-friendly boilers, insulating homes and purchasing solar panels, Radio Zet said.

The government has committed to covering 90 percent of the expenses for low-income residents, with the maximum subsidy limit set at PLN 53,000.

Apart from subsidies, around PLN 39.7 billion will be allocated in the form of bank loans, according to the broadcaster.

The clean air programme kicks off on August 1.
