His statement to Polish Radio’s IAR news agency came after US President Donald Trump last week threatened to introduce a 20 percent excise on cars imported from the European Union.

He previously introduced protectionist tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, to which Brussels is set to respond with a 25 percent duty on up to EUR 2.8 billion of US exports.

Ociepa said Poland was a champion of free trade, which he said drove the global economy.

He added that Poland has good ties with both the US and the EU and that the country could act as a bridge between the two, but that Poland’s friendliness towards the US would not surpass European solidarity.

Earlier this month, Polish Entrepreneurship Minister Jadwiga Emilewicz said US duties would not affect Poland but would hit the European market.

She added that Poland supported the European Union in its opposition to the new US tariffs. (vb)
