Leaders of the European Union’s member states gave the green light to extend sanctions against Russia, the PAP news agency reported on day-two of an EU summit on Friday, citing an unnamed source close to the bloc.

PAP's report comes two days after Polish President Andrzej Duda urged for continued international sanctions against Russia during an official visit to Riga.

Sanctions already in place in retaliation to Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine and annexation of Crimea are due to expire at the end of next month, but the EU is expected to formally extend them by six months in the next few days, PAP said.

Under the sanctions, five major Russian state-run financial institutions, two energy and three armaments companies have limited access to the bloc’s capital market. The sanctions also ban weapons trade with Russia, and exchange of other products that could be applied by the military.

The European Union has said sanctions could be repealed when Russia complies with the terms of the Minsk ceasefire deals.

Sanctions were first introduced in July 2014. (vb)
