Poland will next year start using satellite images to monitor what farmers are growing, Agriculture Minister Jan Ardanowski has said.

Such technology also allows losses caused by drought to be assessed without the need to send inspectors out into fields, Ardanowski said.

He added that employing such methods will free up several thousand inspectors to carry out other tasks.

Warsaw earlier this week asked the European Commission to help farmers in Poland affected by drought, public broadcaster Polish Radio reported.

The agriculture ministry recently said that more than 66,000 Polish farms have been hit amid scorching temperatures this year.
