Officials from 16 EU members and the European Commission gathered in the Slovak capital for a meeting of what is known as the “Friends of Cohesion” group.

Besides Poland and other Central and Eastern European states, the group includes countries such as Italy, Croatia, Malta, Portugal and Greece, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

These countries have formed a united front to oppose any major cuts in EU funding for the bloc's Cohesion and Common Agricultural Policy, according to the news agency.

At the meeting in Bratislava, Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič and Budget Commissioner Günther Oettinger were expected to discuss the EU’s planned 2021-2027 budget with national leaders, IAR reported.
