More than 9.7 million Polish pensioners will receive a cash boost this year under a new government package of benefits, a Cabinet minister said on Thursday.

A total of PLN 10.7 billion (EUR 2.5 bn, USD 2.8 bn) worth of extra benefits will be paid out from public coffers in May as part of the government’s “Pension Plus” initiative, Elżbieta Rafalska, the minister for family, labour and social policy, told a news conference.

The payments will be offered on a one-off basis and be equivalent to the minimum monthly pension of PLN 1,100 gross in each case, Rafalska said.

The government’s “Pension Plus” initiative comes as part of an ambitious new set of spending pledges by Poland’s ruling conservatives that were unveiled during a party convention in late February.
