The new digital devices, known as “online cash registers,” will be installed nationwide under legislation passed by the lower house of parliament in Warsaw last week, the Puls Biznesu business newspaper reported.

It said the move was designed to reduce tax evasion and curb the off-the-books segment of the economy.

Data from the new cash registers will be fed directly to the internal revenue service in real time, according to Puls Biznesu.

The paper reports that the obligation to install the new cash registers will take effect gradually, depending on the type of business. It is expected to affect thousands of retailers and service providers nationwide.
