Polish gas giant signs agreement for more US LNG

Polish state-run oil and gas company PGNiG says it has signed an agreement with US company Venture Global LNG to buy an additional 1.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year as part of efforts to diversify supplies.

The agreement was announced as Polish President Andrzej Duda was on Wednesday visiting Washington to meet with US leader Donald Trump.
The announcement comes as Poland seeks alternative sources of supplies to become independent of Russia.
US Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Poland’s Secretary of State for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, Piotr Naimski, attended the signing ceremony at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building of the White House complex in Washington, the Polish company said on its website.
It added that, under the agreement, the volume of LNG delivered by Venture Global from its Plaquemines terminal under construction in the US state of Louisiana would increase from 1 million to 2.5 million tonnes per year.
Deliveries are expected to begin in 2023.
PGNiG also said that the agreement raised its total commitment with Venture Global LNG projects to 3.5 million tonnes per year, including 1 million tonnes to be sourced from the Calcasieu Pass terminal being built in the US state of Louisiana.
America’s Perry said: "Poland and the United States have a strong and strategic alliance and friendship which is fortified by a shared commitment to energy security and an understanding that true energy security is achieved through energy diversity.”
PGNiG CEO Piotr Woźniak said: "We are increasing our LNG portfolio in terms of volumes, which we will receive from the USA after 2022 ...”
Poland’s Naimski said in February that his country would stop buying Russian gas after its long-term supply contract with Russia’s state-owned producer Gazprom expires in 2022.
