Poland, the Baltic states and the EU executive on Thursday signed an agreement designed to enable Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania to unplug their power grids from Russia.

The political declaration signed in Brussels on Thursday--by the prime ministers of Poland, Latvia and Estonia, the president of Lithuania, and the chief of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker--marks a further step in the process of helping the Baltic states overcome their energy dependence on Russia, according to officials.

Baltic electricity systems will instead be hooked up to the Continental European Network (CEN) via Poland by 2025 as part of the process.

Thursday’s political declaration, which was signed at the start of a two-day summit of EU leaders in the Belgian capital, is a follow-up to a deal that was struck in Brussels in June last year, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.
