The most frequently stolen goods in grocery stores and supermarkets include alcohol, cheese, meat, sweets and fish preserves, a study by Crime&tech, a research centre on security and crime, showed.

The losses account for two percent of the segment’s annual turnover, the Rzeczpospolita daily reported, citing the research.

In other most affected segments, such as DIY, electronic and clothing stores, losses range between 1-2 percent.

The report showed that in clothing stores thieves most often steal accessories, knitwear, trousers and sweatshirts. They opt for mobile phones in electronic shops and expensive tools in DIY outlets.

According to the research, the most frequent cause of product losses in Poland was shoplifting, robbery and burglary.

In Europe, the retail industry is losing €49 billion a year due to theft, according to the study.

Ewa Pytkowska from retail security solutions provider Checkpoint Systems said: “The value of commodity losses is comparable to the turnover of the fourth largest retail chain in Europe.”

She added: “It is very worrying that the actions of so few people can have such a negative impact on companies and their employees.”
