The move comes as companies are beginning their search for shale gas in the country, of which there is an estimated 5.3 trillion cubic metres, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

However, Gaz-System maintains that the estimated 5 billion zloty price tag is a maximum variant.

While there are plans to build the pipeline infrastructure, the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily writes that the costs of shale gas extraction, known as ‘fracking’, are still not known and questions are being raised as to the investments’ profitability.

The new pipelines are reported to be constructed from the northern Tri-City area, comprising Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot, to the south-east reaches of the country in the vicinity of Lublin and the Subcarpathian region. (jb)
