Investment abroad by Polish businesses has increased by around 25 percent since 2009, mostly in emerging markets in the east.

Polish entrepreneurs ploughed some 110 billion zloty (27.5 billion euro) abroad during 2010.

Four out of five of Poland's richest businessmen are tapping into foreign markets, and most often they are looking east.

Jan Kulczyk's (pictured) oil operations take in Syria, Brunei and Ukraine. Leszek Czarnecki is expanding his banking empire across Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, while Michal Solowow's tiles and ceremics business takes in Ukraine and Romania.

Going in the opposite direction, Roman Kartosik is investing in the automobile market in Western Europe. Only Zygmunt Solorz-Zak from Poland's top five richest confines his operations to within his home country's borders.

Other notable investors include Ryszard Krauze, whose Petrolinvest company operates in Kazakhstan. (nh)
