Central Bank Governors from 36 countries, plus the European Central Bank (ECB) were assessed on an A to F scale for their performance in such areas as inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management, with A standing for excellent performance and F for outright failure.

Marek Belka came ahead of Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, who received a C grade, and Jean Claude Trichet of the ECB, who was given a B-.

Two years ago, Sławomir Skrzypek, Belka’s predecessor in the post of the Governor of the National Bank of Poland, also received Grade B in the Global Finance rating.

Before succeeding Skrzypek, who died in the Smolensk air crash in April 2010, Marek Belka served as Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Head of the Europe Department of the International Monetary Fund. In 2005, he ran unsuccessfully for OECD secretary general. (mk/pg)
