In the EU as a whole, unemployment was 9.9 percent in December.
The estimates for the bloc show that 23,800,000 million workers in the EU are unemployed, including 16,500,000 within the eurozone.
In comparison with the previous year, the unemployment rate dropped in 14 member states and rose in 12 and remained unchanged in Ireland.
Among member states, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Austria (4.1 percent), the Netherlands (4.9 percent) and Luxembourg (5.2 percent) while the highest in Spain (22.9), Greece (19.2) and Lithuania (15.3 percent).
Due to a different method of calculating the jobless rate, Poland’s central statistical office (GUS) calculated unemployment recorded December’s rate as being 12.5 percent. (di/pg)
