Hotels have reported that in 2011, they experienced a 7.6 percent rise in guests – over four percent above the European average.
According to the EU statistical service Eurostat, demand for rooms in hotels rose by 3.6 percent in the EU 27.
Polish hotels were undercutting similar quality rooms in other EU countries, writes the Rzeczpospolita daily, which means a lack of funding for further investment.
“Prices in Poland are too low,” claims Tadeusz Gołębiewski, owner of Hotel Gołębiewski.
In December last year, the average room rate in Polish hotels was 65.6 euros, while in the Czech Republic and Slovakia it was over 71 Euro, in Austria and Germany 92 euros, Italy 126 euros.
Another problem is that 87 percent of hotels in Poland are owned independently, with big chains (with low economies of scale) being under represented in the country. (pg)
