Poland's transport minister has announced that the A1 and A4 motorways will not be completed in time for the Euro 2012 football championships this summer.

“I deplore the fact that these ambitions plans – in my opinion, too ambitious – to open these highways before June 2012 will not be realised,” Transport Minister Slawomir Nowak said, Thursday.
The A1 motorway runs north to south in Poland and the A4 plans to connect Germany, Poland with Ukraine – a vital transport link for the Euro 2012 championships, being ho-hosted by both countries.
The motorway programme is badly needed in a country with one of the most limited stretches of highway in the EU.
Minister Nowak said that the recent freezing weather in Poland has put construction behind schedule.
"It gives me no satisfaction to say that we will most likely not be able to drive through the entire A1 and A4 highway for the Euros, as some stretches won't be ready," Nowak said. (pg)
