One of commercial broadcaster TVN’s highest profile news anchors has been released from his contract with the station following an internal investigation into sexual harassment.

In a press release on Tuesday, the broadcaster wrote that “TVN and Kamil Durczok reached a mutual agreement over the termination of cooperation with immediate effect.”

“The Commission has determined that three people have been exposed to unwanted behaviour. TVN has decided to offer these people up to six times their monthly salary [in compensation],” the statement read.

The independent commission was called in to investigate claims first made public by the Wprost weekly that Durczok had sexually harassed and bullied co-workers.

TVN CEO Markus Tellenbach discussed the content of the report of the Board of TVN SA at a conference on Tuesday.

“I am pleased with the work of the Commission and accept its findings. I am confident that after a thorough examination by the Commission, TVN will remain an attractive employer, thanks to the company's current policy of ‘zero tolerance’ for undesirable behaviour.

“On behalf of the Board, I'm sorry people were exposed to unwanted behaviour in the workplace,” Tellenbach added.

What next?

The meteoritic fall from grace will not be easy for Durczok, who was one of Poland’s most recognised journalists.

Mirosław Pęczak, a media expert, told the Onet news service that unlike the situation a couple of decades ago, a person in Durczok’s position will be slightly easier.

“Now he can somehow cope,” Pęczak said. “He can write a book, and sell his story to some media outlet.”

“It is difficult to say that his career has ended,” Pęczak concluded. (rg)
