The Polish Automobile Association (PZMot) is disappointed by the way the racing surface of the Polish Speedway Grand Prix was prepared by Danish company Speed Sport.

The competition was discontinued following just 12 races, after speedway riders refused to ride on the dangerous track.

“PZMot as the organizer has made every effort to ensure that this event abided to the highest standards. We had been in talks with the Danish company BSI [Benfield Sports International] for over two years. The contract forced us to take on Speed Sport owned by [former Speedway champion] Ole Olsen, to oversee the organisation and the technical aspects of the track. Unfortunately, we witnessed many problems,” PZMot deputy head Michał Sikora told a press conference.

The Speedway competition was held on Saturday at the National Stadium in Warsaw, following a several-day preparation of the track.

The competitors had already started complaining about the safety of the track during training on Friday

The Saturday event was further hampered by a technical problem with the starting tape which was not rising properly.

The organisers quickly resigned from this method which is usually used to mark the start of the race, instead using green lights to start the competition. (rg)
