Komorowski congratulated Budka, an MP for the ruling Civic Platform (PO) party, on taking office, as well as Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz on the “speed” to find a replacement in the Council of Ministers.

“The Minister will have a number of serious challenges, I am sure that he will fare well,” President Komorowski said.

A new leaf

Budka has vouched to lead the ministry according to the letter of the law. He also said that his predecessors, particularly Zbigniew Ziobro, the Justice Minister during the PiS-led coalition, used the position for political gains.

“Looking at the actions of minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who combined the functions of the minister and the prosecutor general, there is no doubt for me that that model was inappropriate,” Budka told the TVN broadcaster.

“Law and Justice [PiS]had that approach to the prosecutor's office during its time in power, and it was often used for political purposes.”

Former Justice Minister Cezary Grabarczyk handed in his resignation to Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, Wednesday evening, following media reports that he was granted a firearms licence without taking the proper tests in 2012. (rg)
