WWII celebrations in Westerplatte

Several Western dignitaries will attend celebrations to mark 70 years since the end of WWII in the city of Gdańsk on Thursday.

The events will be attended by the presidents of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania and Ukraine, the presidential chancellery said.

The secretary general of the UN, as well as the head of the European Council will be in attendance.

At 5.00pm, the commemorations will begin with a panel of historians who will discuss "The Legacy of World War II Reconsidered ".

At 9.00pm, candles will be lit at the foot of the Monument to the fallen Shipyard Workers 1970 in Gdańsk.

At 11.40pm, the events will move to Westerplatte, the site of the first Nazi German attack on Poland, which started WWII.

A similar event in Moscow on 9 May has been boycotted by most Western leaders. (rg)
