The ambitious project has long been on the cards as air passenger numbers soar in Poland.

The new airport is to be located in Baranów, less than an hour's drive to the west from the centre of the Polish capital, according to IAR, which said its information came from “two reliable sources.”

Warsaw's Chopin airport, the biggest in the country, was used by 12.8 million passengers in 2016, but projections suggest that it will run out of spare capacity in 2020 while not being able to expand any further due to its location.

Polish airports last year serviced nearly 34 million passengers, 12 percent more than in 2015, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Authority.

Building the new central airport could cost PLN 20-30 billion (EUR 4.67-7 billion), deputy infrastructure minister Jerzy Szmit said in March.

He said at the time that constructing the facility could take 10 or 15 years, adding it could become one of the leading airports in Central Europe.

An official decision on the location of the new airport will be announced next week, the IAR news agency reported on Monday.

Rafał Milczarski, CEO of Poland’s state-controlled airline LOT, has argued that the new airport is needed for the carrier to expand and launch new connections.
