Citta the Elephant, Krakow's official oracle for Euro 2012, has predicted a Polish victory against Greece in the opening match of the tournament on Friday evening.

There was a sharp intake of breath at Krakow Zoo as the 33-year-old plodded over to make her choice on Wednesday morning.

Three yellow melons placed just 60 centimetres apart were presented to the stately elephant, with options for a draw as well as a Polish or Greek win.

Much to the delight of the assembled crowd, Citta chose the melon marked by a Polish flag.

The elephant, who spent many years in a German circus, came to Poland from the Terra Natura Park in Valencia, Spain.

She successfully predicted that Chelsea would win the UEFA Champions League Final against Bayern last month, and Krakow decided to back her as the official oracle of the tournament.

Will the Polish team live up to Citta's forecast, or was the elephant showing a dash of patriotic bias?

All will be revealed on Friday night at the National Stadium in Warsaw.

Meanwhile, Citta fans can meet the elephant in our special audio report. (nh)
