“It's a historic moment for us,” middle blocker Marcin Mozdzonek told Polish Radio after the match at the Armeets Arena in Sofia.

“In the final we beat one of the best teams in the world,” he enthused.

“I hope we can play like this in the future,” he added, as Poland looks forward to the Olympic Games in London later this month.

Last year, Poland won bronze in the World League, but the team had never managed to make it to a final of the event.

“Poland played amazingly,” conceded US coach Alan Knipe.

The Polish team got off to a comfortable start, taking the first set 25-17.

The pressure then came on in the second encounter, with the Poles eventually winning a tough fought battle 26-24.

Poland pulled out all the stops in the third set, with Bartosz Kurek winning some fantastic points for his team, rounding the clash off 25-20.

Besides gold medals, the team walks away with a prize of 1 million dollars (3.4 million zloty), and a new spring in their step as the Olympic Games loom ahead. (nh)
