It will be a tough challenge for the Pole, who lost the leader's yellow jersey on Sunday to Italian Moreno Moser in a gruelling highland circuit around Bukowina Tatrzanska, southern Poland.

“I was expecting a difficult stage and so it was,” Kwiatkowski reflected after Sunday's race.

“I did everything possible to hang on to the yellow jersey and I thank all my team mates for their excellent job,” he said.

“In the last metres Moser took off super strong and I really did my best to stay on him but unfortunately the bonus seconds allowed him to take back the jersey.

“There's still one stage to go,” he stressed.

“There will be the bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, it won't be easy to recapture the jersey, but if is it possible I’ll try."

Meanwhile, Moser himself is steeling himself for the final showdown, which sees riders take on a circuit through the town of Wieliczka, with a finish in Krakow.

“The only shame is that I didn't manage to get a few seconds more between myself and Kwiatkowski,” Moser said.

“Five seconds can be a lot or not, there is still one stage left and there will also be intermediary mileposts with bonus seconds,” he added.

“To win the Tour the entire team and I will have to be careful up to the very last metre.” (nh)
