The match, played out under the roof of Wimbledon's Centre Court after rain delayed the start, finished 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-4 to the German, ending one of Poland's biggest hopes for a medal at London 2012.

Radwanska had the honour of carrying Poland's flag during the opening ceremony of the Games on Friday evening, and her early exit from the women's singles competition confirms the “flag-bearers curse” in Poland.

Since the 1992 Olympic Games, no Polish athlete who has carried the flag during the opening ceremony – usually one of the country's top sports stars – has gone on to win a medal.

Radwanska remains at the Olympic Games as she is in the doubles competition, partnered by her younger sister, Urszula.

There was better news for Poland in the men's volleyball tournament, where the national side came back from losing the first set to Italy, in Pool A, to win three sets to one (21:25, 25:20, 25:23, 25:14).

Italy, alongside Poland and Brazil, are one of the favourites to take home medals during the tournament.

Poland next play Bulgaria, another fancied team, on Tuesday.

Poland's Sylwian Bogacka picked up Poland’s first medal of the Games on Saturday when she won silver in the 10 metre air rifle competition. (pg)
