The Polish driver was quick to make his mark in the Italian event, demonstrating that he has lost none of his confidence since sustaining critical injuries in February 2011 in the Ronde di Andorra rally.
After the first two sections of the rally, Kubica had a lead of eleven seconds over Italian Corrado Fontana in second place.
Kubica has taken on a new car for the rally - the Citroen C4 WRC.
Before beginning the event, the 27-year-old spoke to journalists at a press conference about the possibility of his ultimate return to Formula 1.
“At the moment I don't have any long-term plans as I'm still undergoing treatment,” he said, as cited by the Polish Press Agency.
“However, I already have a few events under my belt, and I'm counting on my health continuing to improve,” he added.
“I really want to return to competing on the highest level,” he concluded. (nh)
