Kowalczyk wins Tour de Ski stage 5

Justyna Kowalczyk won the 3 km race in Toblach, northern Italy, in the fifth stage of the Tour de Ski , Friday.

Kowalczyk, the cross country skiing Olympic Champion and two-time World Champion, who will be 30 years-old on 19 January, beat Finland’s Krista Lähteenmäki by 16.5 seconds in the short, 3 kilometer stage.

The Norwegian Astrid Jacobsen was third.

With two stages to go in the competition modeled on cycling’s Tour de France, Kowalczyk leads Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla by one minute and three seconds in the overall classification.

Tour de Ski concludes on Sunday. (pg)
