Mayor Pawel Adamowicz was joined by Deputy Minister of Sport Grzegorz Karpinski and chairman of the Polish Motoring Union (PZM) Andrzej Witkowski at a press conference in the Baltic city on Monday.

Deputy minister Karpinski said that the government will support the venture. However, mayor Adamowicz affirmed that the city will also be seeking backing from private concerns.

“We will be searching widely for partners,” Adamowicz said, as quoted by Radio Gdansk.

An area of 200 hectares has already been ear-marked for the project on the southern fringe of the city.

Andrzej Witkowski revealed that the centre will not only house a track for hosting car and motorcycle races, but it will also provide facilities for training budding stars on go-karts.

Mayor Adamowicz did not speculate on eventual costs, nor on a possible time-frame for realising the project. (nh)
