Around 27,000 runners respected a minute's silence for victims of the Boston Marathon bombing before starting the ORLEN Warsaw Marathon and 10 km fun run, Sunday morning.

A larger than usual police presence accompanied the runners around the 42 kilometre course through the streets of the capital, following the terrorist attack in Boston last week.

On Saturday, Sports Minister Joanna Mucha called for runners to “show they are not afraid” in the wake of the bombings.

“In so far as it can be secure, it is secure,” Minister Mucha said of the route.

A minute's silence was also observed before the start of the London Marathon, which also took place this Sunday.

In the elite class in the Warsaw marathon, Jaouad Gharib, who won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics and the World Champion title in Paris and Helsinki, is taking part and Henryk Szost, Dmitry Baranovsky and Artur Kozłowski were hoping for podium finishes.

Celebrity participants includes former world and Olympic champion ski jumper Adam Malysz. (pg)
