Despite Poland’s underwhelming performance in the World Cup qualifying group stages, coach Waldemar Fornalik’s position may still be safe as the cost of severance pay could deter his sacking.

The Perzeglad Sportowy sports daily writes that Fornalik would have to be paid all salary up to the end of his contract, which expires in December this year.

That amounts to over 1 million zloty (250,000 euros) that the cash-strapped Polish football association (PZPN) would have to find if they decided to change coaches this year.

Poland could only manage a tame 1 – 1 draw with Moldova in Group H last Friday and currently languish in fourth place behind Ukraine, England and Montenegro, with little chance of qualifying for the finals in Brazil next year.

Fornalik is thought to be on a wage of 160,000 zloty (40,000 euros) a month, 10,000 zloty more than his predecessor Franciszek Smuda. (pg)
