Malachowski misses out on gold in Moscow

Piotr Malachowski had to be content with silver in the discus throw at the World Athletic Championships when he was beaten to the gold medal by Germany's Robert Harting, Tuesday.

Harting, the current Olympic champion, threw 69.11 meters to Malachowski's 68.38.

Gerd Kanter of Estonia took bronze with 65.19.

Poland had made Malachowski a red-hot favourite for gold after beating Harting regularly this season.

Robert Urbanek took sixth place with a throw of 64.32 metres.

On Monday, Pawel Fajdek won Poland's first medal at the championships in Moscow when he took gold in the hammer throw. (pg)
