Janowicz, currently ranked No. 14 in the ATP ratings, blamed a bad back for his 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 loss against Argentine Maximo Gonzales (ATP No. 247).

“I'm very disappointed,” Janowicz said after the match, revealing that he had strained a muscle while training on Saturday.

“I couldn't serve properly,” he stressed.

After losing the first set, the Pole had asked for a masseur to ease the pain on his back.

He promptly took three games, but his winning streak was not to last.

Meanwhile, fellow Pole Lukasz Kubot (ATP 71), who played against Janowicz in this summer's Wimbledon quarter-final, lost to Finnish challenger Jarko Nieminen, 7-5, 7-5, 6-2.

Janowicz and Kubot are still set to play together in the doubles. However, Kubot slightly twisted his ankle yesterday, meaning that both players appear far from their best.

Meanwhile, Agnieszka and Urszula Radwanska both won their first round clashes in the women's tournament. (nh)
