“We did the job, which was to beat San Marino,” coach Waldemar Fornalik said after the clash.

“The game went well, particularly the first half, when we went on the offensive, but once again some of our old mistakes were made in the defence,” he added.

As it was, after Piotr Zielinski got Poland off to the start it needed with a goal in the tenth minute, Della Vale equalised for San Marino, scoring its first ever goal against Poland.

However, Waldemar Sobota, who scored Poland's third goal of the match, reflected that the margin of victory is acceptable nonetheless.

“After this victory, there is light at the end of the tunnel. We wanted to win against San Marino by as much as possible and we managed to get five goals.”

Poland still needs luck on its side, with the team currently in fourth place in its six-team group. Exceptional performances are needed in the two remaining clashes, including a rematch with group leader England, as well a clash with second-placed Ukraine.

Only the winners of the nine groups go through, together with the winners of four play-offs between group runners-up. (nh)
