Radwanska beat unseeded Spaniard Muguruza - one of the surprises of the tournament so far, in a quick two-set win, 6 - 1, 6 - 3.

Meanwhile, Azarenka easily beat American Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-2 to also advance to the quarterfinals and stay on track for her third straight Australian Open title.

Radwanska said after the match that she was relieved to get through to the next round so easily.

"I'm just very, very happy that I could play my best tennis tonight. I watched her play and I knew that I would have to play at 100 per cent to beat her," the 24-year-old from Krakow and fifth seed said.

Radwanska has reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open four times in a row, but she has never managed to get further.

Her best performance at one of the four Grand Slam tournaments was at Wimbledon in 2012, when she made it to the final, ultimately losing against US star Serena Williams. (nh/pg)
