World No. 5 Radwanska had been tipped to win the match against the Slovak (WTA No. 20), but the Polish star simply could not find her form.

Radwanska made as many as 24 unforced errors, and failed to take advantage of opportunities to break Cibulkova's serve, while simultaneously fudging her own service games.

Unable to contain her disappointment, she blocked a television camera with a towel as she walked off the court.

Prior to the clash, Radwanska had remarked that “I think it's always tricky to play someone that you know for so long and play so many times as well.”

Over the last seven times the two played each other, Radwanska chalked up six victories, although Cibulkova had triumphed when they played in Stanford in 2013.

‘‘Even if I made mistakes, I knew I had to go out there and go for my shots,’’ Cibulkova said after the Melbourne match.

‘‘I have a lot of respect for Aga. Her defensive game is unbelievable.’’

Radwanska has only made it to a final of one of the four Grand Slam tournaments on one occasion, losing to US star Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2012.

Cibulkova will now play China's Li Na in the Australian Open final. (nh)
