Poland won silver in the women's team pursuit on Saturday, hot on the heels of the men, who took bronze in the same discipline.

The silver takes Poland's tally to six medals, and 11th position in the overall rankings as athletes get stuck into the last day of the Sochi games.

Half of those medals came in speed skating, with Zbigniew Brodka winning the gold in the men's 1500m, together with Saturday's double in the team pursuit.

Yesterday's silver medallists, who were pipped to the post by the Netherlands in the final, said that Poland's speed skating success in Sochi would hopefully inspire authorities back home to invest in a training hall.

“Whether it's in Warsaw or Zakopane, a hall is essential,” Katarzyna Wozniak told Polish Radio.

Poland is a candidate to host the Winter Olympics in 2022, in a joint bid with Slovakia, meaning that that there are strong hopes for a wave of investment.

“We now have three medals in Sochi. It would be strange if the government did not think about speed skating,” Luiza Zlotkowska said. (nh)
