Pawel Dunaj and Michal Obrycki had hoped to make the first ever winter ascent of Nanga Parbat, Pakistan, together with four other members of their Polish group.
The climbers were caught in the avalanche on Saturday, with Dunaj suffering broken ribs and Obrycki a broken nose and minor injuries to his legs.
It was originally hoped that the pair would be evacuated by helicopter, but weather conditions proved too treacherous for an air rescue.
In recent days the pair have been looked after at base camp by fellow group members.
However, the team's stock of painkillers has now run out, hence the decision to have the pair carried down by stretcher.
It is expected that the injured Poles will be taken by jeep to a hospital in the region's capital, Gilgit. (nh)
