No Pole has ever finished the four-part epic before, which involves week-long races across the Sahara, Gobi and Atacama deserts, as well as Antarctica.

“We are not just running for ourselves,” participant Marcin Zuk said at a press conference in Warsaw on Wednesday.

“Since we are in good health, and have the opportunity to do this, we want to share it,” he added.

The three runners already have the first leg of the 4 Deserts challenge behind them, having completed 250 km across the Sahara in February.

The next stop is the Gobi Desert, and the three Poles are due to arrive there in late May.

Zuk and his companions Daniel Lewczuk and Marek Wikiera will be raising funds for a girl named Blanka, who was born prematurely after her mother's nine-week pregnancy. The girl needs constant medical attention and the family is struggling to meet all the costs.
